Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
While many popular chain restaurants can be found in Del Rio, it's the locally owned eateries that add a unique flavor to the city's food scene. Here's a look at some of Del Rio's best restaurants.
Cripple Creek Steakhouse offers some of the best steaks in Texas. A 32-ounce bone-in Tomahawk Ribeye is a challenge for any carnivore, but the flavor with every bite can set off fireworks in a steak lover’s mouth. If you aren’t up to the 32-ounce challenge, try the ribeye or on weekends, they have one of the best prime ribs around.
Manuel's Steakhouse was a long-time Acuna icon and has established itself as one of the best in Del Rio after moving to this side of the border. Dine in an upscale atmosphere and from a menu that features steaks, seafood, Mexican dishes and specialties such as frog legs, quail and cabrito. The restaurant also offers a signature treat, Manuel's Flaming Dessert, which includes vanilla ice cream, pecans and brandy. In addition, Manuel's has a full bar with flat-screen TVs, and it hosts local musical acts.
If you drive Hwy 90 towards the lake, you can find Wright’s Steakhouse. Their Chicken Fried Steak sets a standard in a state that has a high-standard for Chicken Fried Steak. They’re not a one-trick pony though, with tip steak and a garlic flavored steak you won’t soon forget.
Hot Pit BBQ has been a local favorite for more than 40 years thanks to its homestyle brisket and sausage served as a sandwich or plated and paired with the restaurant's famous sauce. Sides like beans, potato salad, coleslaw and jalapenos are also on the menu at this cafeteria-style eatery, as well as smoked baked potatoes and apple pie.
For tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and other Mexican fare, visit Chinto's Mexican Restaurant. It's also known for its half-pound Mexican burger that is piled high with cheese, lettuce, tomato and guacamole, and comes with a side of French fries. Although lunch is good, their breakfast tacos are out of this world. The restaurant’s roots date back to Acuna, when the original Chinto would wake up early, put the kids in the car, and go peddle the tacos on the streets while the kids slept in the car. Today, you can find both Chintos, father and son, at the counter of this little jewel.
Doc Holliday's now offers a full menu along with its popular dance floor and bar. Diners can enjoy pizza, pasta, salads and Mexican dishes, with cocktails, wine and beer also available. Doc Holliday's also offers nightly specials, and hosts events such as dance competitions and karaoke parties.
The food at Memo's Restaurant is as delectable as its history is long and colorful. The popular eatery has been a mainstay since 1936, when Guillermo “Memo” and Leonor Calderon opened the restaurant on the banks of San Felipe Creek. Their son, Moises "Blondie" Calderon, took over the business in 1959. Blondie later became the piano player and music director for country music legend Ray Price from 1967 until Blondie's death in 2000. Today, Blondie's wife, Dolly, and their daughter, Patricia Ray, run the restaurant that features Mexican fare such as fajitas, enchiladas, tacos and chalupas, as well as steaks and sandwiches.
The Brown Bag, at the corner of S Main and E Garfield, is one of the area's top lunch spots. The deli offers daily lunch specials including fish tacos, which are available on Wednesdays and get rave reviews and also serves soups, salads, sandwiches and a variety of desserts.
Blue Oasis Another great evening dine with a hint of fun can be found at Blue Oasis where acoustic sets, margarita specials and some outstanding bar food will draw your attention.
